Firehiwot Siyum

Independent Expert, former coordinator of the Ethiopian National Business and Disability Network
Firehiwot Siyum Tadese is a young African disabled woman who previously worked at a local NGO, Ethiopian Center for Disability and Development (ECDD) where she was able to achieve in establishing the Ethiopian Business and Disability Network (EBDN) in Ethiopia, funded by the ILO. The Network embraces companies and other employers as its members to address disability issue from business perspective.
Firehiwot is currently the Ethics and Child Protection Officer at the Population Council in Ethiopia where she leads the implementation of the Council’s child protection policy and ensures that safeguarding and protection of beneficiaries and community members are disability inclusive. She provides technical assistance around disability inclusion for DFID-funded project that works to reach out of school adolescent girls, including boys and girls with disabilities.
Firehiwot is a social worker by training from Addis Ababa University. And in 2017, she received Open Society Foundation’s Civil Society Leadership Award (CSLA) to earn her masters in cultural foundations of education with a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS) in disability studies from Syracuse University in New York.
And again, she recently received the Open Society’s Civil Society Professionals Program (CSPP) to join the Disability Team at the International Labour Organization in Geneva as an intern in November 2019.
