Jerome Bellion-Jourdan

International Negotiation and Policy-Making Programme, Graduate Institute
Director
Geneva
For nearly 9 years until 2019, Jerome Bellion-Jourdan was a lead negotiator for the European Union on Business and Human Rights in the UN Human Rights Council. He has also led negotiations on other other thematic issues (impact of arms transfers on human rights, management of hazardous substances and wastes, right to development, sexual orientation and gender identity) and country situations in the Middle East and North Africa, Asia and Latin America.

In September 2021, Jerome Bellion-Jourdan was appointed Director of the International Negotiation and Policy-Making Programme at Graduate Institute's Executive Education in Geneva. He is also exploring with a group of individuals from international organisations, governments, business, civil society and others the potential for a new initiative to rethink the formats of global negotiations.

Since he left the EU, Jerome Bellion-Jourdan also remained heavily involved in the area of Business and Human Rights/Responsible Business Conduct: design and delivery of trainings in negotiation and Business and Human Rights for UNITAR; speaker at events on mandatory Human Rights Due Diligence.

In September 2021, he wrote a tribute to Prof. John Ruggie (https://www.business-humanrights.org/en/latest-news/in-memory-of-john-g-ruggie-tribute-by-jerome-bellion-jourdan/) and has published several blog posts:

Beyond the United Nations, Jerome Bellion-Jourdan has been engaged in several multi-stakeholder initiatives such as the Mega-Sporting Events platform leading to the establishment of a Centre for Sport and Human Rights, and the International Code of Conduct for Private Security Providers’ Association - both established in Geneva.

Prior to Geneva, Jerome Bellion-Jourdan was posted with the European Commission in Cairo (2004-2006) and Jerusalem (2007-2010). He also served as an Arabic-speaking detention delegate with the International Committee of the Red Cross (2006-2007) and as a researcher on Middle East and North Africa at the International Secretariat of Amnesty International in London (2001 to 2004).

Jerome Bellion-Jourdan holds a Ph.D in Political Science of Sciences Po. Paris and sits on the Board of Directors of Sciences Po. Grenoble since 2017. In a private capacity, he authored “The Charitable Crescent. Politics of Aid in the Muslim World” (IB Tauris, 2009) with Jonathan Benthall and, on his own, several other publications.
